LATEST NEWS
Michael Swendrowski
on Eco-friendly Vehicles
Specialty Vehicle Services, LLC. president Michael
Swendrowski will facilitate moderated discussions about eco-friendly
vehicles and fuels during the
Mobile
Services: On the Road to the Future program at the
American Library Association's 2009 annual conference in Chicago,
IL. This program is the first part of the 4th annual
"Bookmobile
Sunday", which will be followed by the 3rd annual
Parade of
Bookmobiles and the formal launch of
Behind the Wheel of a Bookmobile.
These discussions will center around alternative
fuels, vehicle emissions, hybrid power systems, solar panels, green
materials, fuel conscious driving habits, and refuse and recycling as
they relate to bookmobiles and other specialty vehicles.

National Bookmobile
Day
The
ALA's
Subcommittee on Bookmobiles, lead by Michael Swendrowski has
received approval to organize the first ever "National Bookmobile Day"
starting in 2010.
"Bookmobiles and
direct-delivery outreach services are an integral, vital part of
libraries around the country. For over 100 years bookmobiles have
served rural, urban, suburban and tribal areas, bringing access to
information and life-long learning resources to all classes and
communities. Bookmobiles are a central part of library service.
Recognizing their contribution to public life will serve to highlight
their value and extend their reach" says Swendrowski.
Celebrating the
Bookmobile during National Library Week 2010 will accomplish three key
goals:
 |
Demonstrating to the
profession, friends and trustees that bookmobile services are a core
component of library service delivery. |
 |
Demonstrating to the
local community that bookmobiles are vital and that use growing,
making a case for continued support and funding |
 |
Demonstrating through
the national media that bookmobiles are modern, changing and dynamic
mobile information centers for the 21st century |
Initiatives within ALA
around National Bookmobile Day will be coordinated by the Bookmobile
Advisory Sub-Committee of the OLOS Advisory Committee and OLOS Staff
acting as liaison to the committee, in conjunction with the Public
Awareness Committee’s National Library Week Committee. Media outreach
services will be provided by the Public Information Office. The Day
will be prominently featured through
www.ILoveLibraries.org and
other ALA social media for the public.
The Association for
Bookmobile and Outreach Services (ABOS), an ALA Affiliate, is the likely
and best partner for co-sponsorship of National Bookmobile Day during
National Library Week. Working formally with ABOS as a named co-sponsor
allows ALA to access an established pool of professional resources and a
wider community of practice than exists solely within the ALA bookmobile
community. For over 20 years, ABOS has been the leader in organizing
bookmobile staff around issues affecting their work life and visibility
in the profession. Through numerous formal and informal arrangements
with ALA-OLOS, ABOS has demonstrated a capacity to be a full partner on
mutually beneficial initiatives.
While the Day can
succeed in promoting its goals without a national sponsor or additional
private funds, securing sponsors will help extend marketing and build
awareness among the public and key constituents. Several non-exclusive
scenarios will be explored to allow corporate donors an opportunity to
associate themselves with literacy and lifelong learning messages
inherent in Bookmobile services. Additionally, corporate support would
be apportioned to underwrite the creation and distribution of
professional and advocacy toolkits. Sponsors within the library world,
like vehicle manufacturers, as well as corporate partners who wish to
reach the core audience served by Bookmobiles will be approached.
ALA-OLOS and ABOS will commit to developing several downloadable
toolkits to support the programming, activities, professional education,
advocacy and media outreach goals for National Bookmobile Day. A joint
Task Force has been empanelled and is chaired by
Kevin Walsh of the
Indian
Trails Public Library District, charged with editorial oversight of
the toolkits and solicitation of support from the bookmobile vendor
community to underwrite design and production costs. Downloadable
materials will be available at no cost to libraries and bookmobiles.
These resources will update and extend existing ALA and ABOS resources.

SVS Partners with
GE® Healthcare
| Specialty Vehicle Services, LLC. has
been named a "preferred mobile partner" by GE® Healthcare's Lunar
business unit. Under this long-term agreement, SVS will design
and manage the construction and delivery of mobile bone densitometry
(DXA) solutions for shared clients using the GE® Prodigy™ direct
digital densitometer.
In the United States, over 28 million people are
at high risk of developing osteoporosis. Up to 1.5 million
fractures a year are attributed to osteoporosis, with related health
care expenditures over $14 billion annually. Mobile DXA
solutions will greatly assist in early detection of this
silent, progressive disease by providing accessibility to as many
patients as possible.
As part of this important project, and in addition
to custom solutions, SVS has developed the "Mobile
Prodigy Aero", a rapid delivery standardized solution with
pre-configured option and graphics packages. The "Aero" is
efficient, reliable and easy to operate - ideal for high frequency
contracted services.

Our
Hurricane Relief Efforts
| After the devastation of
both Katrina and Rita, Specialty Vehicle Services, LLC (SVS) worked
closely with
The Mobile Health Clinics Network (MHCN) and affiliates to identify available mobile
health clinics nationwide that could be rapidly mobilized to assist
in hurricane stricken areas. In the days following the
disasters, many calls were received from local agencies and clinics
pleading for assistance. SVS and MHCN were able to match
identified units with agencies and clinics in need. |
| In just one example of the incredible
generosity encountered during this endeavor, a mobile "Breathmobile"
owned by
Mobile
C.A.R.E. Foundation of Chicago was loaned indefinitely to the
Louisiana Primary Care Association
(PCA) to serve displaced victims in New Orleans. As part
of the
Mobile Health Providers Coalition of Chicago (MHPC), Mobile
C.A.R.E. loaded the unit with well-needed medical supplies,
volunteered a driver to move the unit to Louisiana and even offered
to carry insurance on the unit until 7/06!
Our sincerest thanks are extended to all involved
in making a difference. Please feel free to learn more about
these wonderful organizations by following the hyperlinks to their
websites and getting involved. For additional success stories
